The Clubhouse was packed on Friday evening, the 4th of September. A crowd of Club officials, members, players and former players, and other guests assembled and eagerly awaited an ‘Evening with Matt’ and the opportunity to get to know and understand our new head coach rather better.
Expertly organised by our Vice-Chair, Richard Purchase, the evening was a typically convivial Marlborough Rugby gathering on The Common. We enjoyed a three course meal (it’s truly amazing what can actually be delivered out of our very small kitchen!) and some time to catch up with friends as the new season approaches.
Matt Garvey, recently appointed as the Club’s head coach, was a joy to listen to. His Q&A session after supper was fabulously compered by Richard, and gave Matt the opportunity to describe his ‘rugby journey’ to us all. It was fascinating to hear such a frank account of what led him into the game and how he made such a success of his career. It was especially good to have his honest view of our little Club as he sees it. And it was refreshing to have his insights, notable amongst which were his desire to see all players - regardless of age or experience - to do their very best to be ‘coachable’ and to hear him describe his coaching ethos - based on “honesty, transparency, and hard work.”
All in all an excellent evening. If you were not able to attend, you certainly missed a good one! But please don’t worry, we will work hard to deliver more such events as the season develops.
