Marlborough RFC

18 - 7

(HT 10-7)

Wimborne RFC

Marlborough Colts produced a disciplined and determined performance to secure an 18–7 victory over Wimborne, claiming the cup after a hard-fought contest.

The game began at a lively pace, and it took just seven minutes for Marlborough to strike first. Sam Piper finished well on the wing after a strong attacking move down the slope, touching down for the opening try. The conversion was missed, but Marlborough had an early 5–0 lead.

Midway through the first half, Marlborough extended their advantage. After an excellent chase from Jack Baker, who hunted down a kick ahead, the ball was worked through the hands before James Paul powered over the line. The conversion attempt was again unsuccessful, leaving Marlborough 10–0 ahead after 20 minutes.

Wimborne responded before the break with a well-constructed attacking move. A sharp line break under the posts resulted in a try that was successfully converted, closing the gap to 10–7 at half-time. Despite the pressure, Marlborough’s defence stood firm throughout the half, with Doug Lemon leading the effort with several strong tackles and commanding organisation.

The second half started slowly as both sides battled for territory. Ten minutes after the restart, Marlborough showed impressive resilience to regain momentum. Jack Baker capped a strong performance with a try, pushing Marlborough’s lead to 15–7, although the conversion was again missed.

With around 10 minutes remaining, Marlborough had a chance to extend the lead further, but Lawrence’s penalty attempt struck the post. However, with five minutes left, Lawrence made no mistake, calmly slotting a penalty to stretch the score to 18–7.

Wimborne continued to push in the closing stages, but Marlborough maintained control. The team’s attacking rhythm was well directed by Alfie at scrum-half, whose game management helped see out the win.

At the final whistle, Marlborough were confirmed 18–7 winners and Cup champions.

Man of the Match: Doug Lemon, whose defensive leadership and relentless work rate were key to Marlborough’s victory.
