Marlborough Rugby Colts vs Supermarine RFC Colts
A cool afternoon set the stage for a fiercely contested clash between our Colts and Supermarine; and this turned out to be a match that delivered momentum swings, standout individual efforts, and no shortage of drama.
⸻
First Half
Both sides opened with a messy first five minutes, struggling to settle as handling errors and loose breakdown work disrupted early rhythms. But Marlborough soon found their intensity. A superb defensive challenge from Sam on Supermarine’s 22 in the 10th minute lifted the home side and shifted momentum.
Marlborough were awarded a penalty shortly after, but the attempt from their No. 10 drifted wide. They didn’t have to wait long for points, though—Felix finished brilliantly in the 13th minute to break the deadlock. Marlborough held a 5–0 lead heading into the 15-minute mark.
Supermarine hit back on 20 minutes with a penalty try, the referee judging Marlborough to have illegally halted a dangerous attack. The visitors now led 7–5, and moments later added pressure with an excellent 50:22 kick in the 23rd minute.
Marlborough responded by stealing possession from the resulting lineout, and then hit back with a superb 50:22 of their own in the 26th minute. But the half took a difficult turn as Marlborough’s No. 12 was forced off injured in the 29th minute, unsettling their structure.
Despite this, the match remained tight and competitive, reaching 5- 7 by the 35th minute. Marlborough’s scrum-half then produced a brilliant kick to pin Supermarine deep, setting the stage for a crucial strike.
In the 38th minute, Marlborough’s No. 8 powered over under the posts after sustained pressure, restoring the lead. With the conversion added, Marlborough went into halftime 12–7 ahead.

Second Half
The second half kicked off at 14:48, and Marlborough came out firing. Strong pressure from the restart allowed Raif to pounce for their third try, though the conversion was missed. At 17–7, Marlborough looked in control.
But Supermarine responded quickly. In the 47th minute their No. 10 sliced straight through the defence to score, narrowing the gap to 17–14.
A scrum deep in Supermarine’s 22 around the 57 min mark offered Marlborough a chance to extend their lead, but they couldn’t convert the opportunity. Supermarine then struck twice in rapid succession—first taking the lead 19–17 around 67 mins then stretching it to 26–17 3 minutes later
Marlborough refused to fold, battling back to close the gap to 26–22 as the match entered its final stages. Despite sustained pressure, they couldn’t find the final breakthrough, and Supermarine held on for the win in what had been a hard-fought contest.
